Strawberry fields forever
Every city loves to be the world leader at something, whether it's the biggest buildings, the highest standard of living, or the richest financial district. Plant City's claim to fame is a bit out of the ordinary. Welcome to 'The Winter Strawberry Capital of the World'. But a Plant City vacation rental is about more than just fruit-related superlatives. Strawberry City is a relaxed, easy-living place, where that warm Florida sun shines year-round, and for somewhere so close to the bright lights and loop-the-loops of Tampa and Orlando, it's got a small-town charm that's all its own.
Digging down into the roots of Plant City
For a city where no trains stop, Plant City is pretty hot on its rail history. The Willaford Railroad museum has an extensive collection of rail memorabilia and a train-viewing platform. For a dose of African-American history, visit the Bing Rooming House Museum, or to go even further back in time, take your mini-paleontologists to mine for fossils and meet life-size (plastic) dinosaurs at Dinosaur World. For an animal encounter of the less polystyrene variety, take a half-hour drive over to the theme park and zoo at Busch Gardens. Or you could jack the driving up to 45 minutes and hit Walt Disney World.
Winter is NOT coming
Ah, that miraculous Gulf Coast Climate - it's not quite tropical, but it's darn close. Anywhere that can produce red, ripe strawberries in the dead of winter is not going to be dishing up Game of Thrones-style blizzards. In fact, winter is just about the best time for a Plant City vacation rental. Mild and dry, you're unlikely to need more than a light jacket. As for summers, they tend to be humid and hot, and daily thunderstorms are pretty much a fact of life. Mark yourself out as a traveler by getting one of those plastic ponchos they sell at Disney.
Keeping it wet and wild with the Alafia alligators
Whether it's cascading from the sky in summer, off to the side of the highway, or swooshing over your head at Splash Mountain, water is never very far away in this part of Florida. Half an hour over to the west, you've got Tampa Bay, which connects into that big, wide Gulf of Mexico. And then there are those lakes and wetlands, home to local celebrities like the alligator. For a good chance of seeing one, head out to Alafia River State Park. Oh, and you might come across one or two strawberry fields.
